TAYLOR - Mace
Mary Ann TAYLOR travelled to Christchurch from London in about 1859. Her Taylor family was difficult to find until we did genealogy DNA tests on Ancestry (apart from the name Taylor, she wrote a variety of dates on her records).
TAYLOR is a very common surname, derived from an occupation, from the Olde French, tailleur, a cutter of cloth. Tailor is the trade-name, and Taylor and Tayler the surname. The early rolls are full of instances, and as a result Taylor is the fourth commonest patronymic in England, giving precedence only to Smith, Jones, and Williams. Variants of this surname include: Tayler, Tailor & Taylour.
