ALLSOP - Burks

The ALLSOP surname may be of Anglo-Saxon origin and probably locational - maybe derived from the village of Alsop-en-le-Dale in Derbyshire, England (recorded as "Elleshope" in the 1086 Domesday Book). The name was a mainly found in Derbyshire until recent times. Common spelling variants include Allsopp, Alsop, Allsup, Allsep, Alsoppe, and Alsup.

( The Allsop/Burks family lived/worked in a variety of Gainsborough Yards: Markhams Yard in 1881- maybe also known as Dickensons Yard. Entry may have been near 42 Church Street. Apparently Gainsborough was famous for it's Yards, which were small tenement housing/workshops built behind existing properties. Conditions were cramped and likely to have been unhealthy (served by a common pump and toilet/wash-house).
